The South West England Soils Discussion Group (SWESDiG) was set up in 1975 to stimulate interest in the study of soils in the Region, and provide a means whereby individuals from different institutions and fields of activity can meet to discuss problems and topics of common interest.Membership of the group is free. Meetings are organised on an ad hoc basis on selected themes relevant to the wider study of soils, land use and the environment in the South West.

We are delighted to invite all BSSS Early Career Members to the 2019 ECR Conference which will be held at The Edge, University of Sheffield. Whether you’ve just started your PhD or Post-Doc or whether you are near to their completion, the BSSS ECR Conference will be an excellent opportunity to present your research, develop your networks and think ahead about careers and job opportunities.
Thank you very much to those of you who have already let us know your nearest town.
Sorry for two messages in quick succession, but I should have said that if you set your preferences to receive these regional notifications, you will also of course need to ensure your email address is correct, in the relevant section of 'my account' - otherwise the messages will still not reach you!
You will have seen the recent message from our new Chair, Leila Froud, and we have begun her time in the position with a very productive committee meeting this morning.
The committee are looking forward to providing at least two main events next year: one with Plymouth University on the topic of soil erosion; and one with Natural England looking at nature reserves and soil awareness. Exact dates for these are being decided and the committee will be talking to prospective speakers in the next few weeks.
'Go, sit upon the lofty hill, | And turn your eyes around, | Where waving woods and waters wild | Do hymm an autumn sound' (Elizabeth Barnett Browning, ‘The Autumn Poem’)
Update from your local Regional Group
This is my first official correspondence as Chair of the South West Soils Discussion Group (aka SWSDG). For those who don’t know me yet, I have been a member of BSSS and been based in the South West for 10 years now. I got involved with the local group a few years ago after I joined the BSSS Council as an “Ordinary Member”.
We are delighted to announce the new SEESOIL committee chair will be Harriet Robson from 1 Jan 2019. Congratulations Harriet!

This year, Dan and his team of ECR Reps have planned a special post-conference social for all Early Career Researchers, including all current PhD students and Post-Docs! It’s free and you’re invited!
I hope you are enjoying the summer and that your soils are not suffering too much in the heat and dry. We don't have any regional events this season, however there are a couple of announcements to make.
