Peatland Restoration: Policy and Practice - Joint meeting SSDG & NSN

Event date:
Thursday, February 23, 2017
Event venue:
International Centre for Life, Times Square, Newcastle-on-Tyne, United Kingdom
Event description:

A joint meeting between the Northern Soils Network and the Scottish Soils Discussion Group will take place on 23rd February in Newcastle. The meeting will cover ongoing work and research in peatland restoration across the UK.

Peatland in the UK has been managed for centuries, and in many places has been drained or cut extensively. Current UK climate goals require a reduction in our national carbon emissions and finding new ways to store carbon from the atmosphere. Peatland restoration has great potential in this area, and may also provide additional benefits in the form of flood risk reduction, improved water supply and reduced soil erosion.

Several speakers will present on research, regulatory frameworks and ongoing restoration work in this area - the programme is attached. There will also be discussion sessions and an opportunity for attendees to network with colleagues and develop future strategies for peatland restoration.

The aim of the meeting is to inform about the current state of peatland restoration in the UK, and to also produce a position paper for circulation to key stakeholder groups.

4 BASIS CPD points have been accredited to this meeting (3 Environment, 1 Personal Development) so please ensure you have your BASIS ID number with you and make sure you complete the form on the day.

Registration costs including refreshments, lunch and parking:

Members of the British Society of Soil Science - £10

Non-members - £30

Speakers will attend for free

Please note that everyone attending the meeting will need to register in advance to enable us to accurately organise refeshments and seating requirements.
