The Science Council is looking to recruit a new Chair for the Science Council Registration Authority (RA). The current Chair, Dr Colin Grant CSci will retire in August this year. The Board is seeking a successor who is committed to ensuring that the Science Council’s Licensed Bodies maintain robust and high-quality professional standards.
The RA is responsible, on behalf of the Board, for setting standards for the professional registers, auditing Licensed Bodies and ensuring the continued maintenance and operation of the registers in accordance with our Regulations. Professional registration is a mark of achievement and ongoing competence for professional scientists; and there are currently over 12,500 scientists on the registers.
The Chair will provide strategic leadership of the RA, working with Licensed Bodies and other partners in supporting the development and growth of the Science Council’s licensing standards and professional registers. The right individual will have distinguished themselves in their profession and should already hold, or be eligible for, the Chartered Scientist designation, or equivalent professional status. They will need to inspire trust and confidence in our Licensed Bodies and be able to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the issues facing science and the science professions.
The role will include chairing quarterly meetings of the Science Council RA and attend quarterly Board meetings to report on behalf of the RA. I attach more details of the role and the type of individual we are hoping to identify.
Term of office
The post-holder will serve for an initial four-year term with the potential to renew for a further four years.
Between 25 and 30 days per annum, including approx 4 Board meetings and 4 RA meetings. The Council of Members meet up to 3 times per year to which the Chair is encouraged to attend. The majority of meetings will be in central London.
In addition to these meetings other contact – usually electronic or by telephone – will be necessary with the Chair of the Board and Science Council staff.
A role description is available here. You can submit your application here. Please submit your application by 5pm on Friday 29th March. Following the closing date, candidates will be shortlisted and interviewed (interviews will take place on the 8th May) and the successful candidate will be appointed by the Board at its meeting on Tuesday 21st May.
