The British Society of Soil Science’s ‘David S Jenkinson Fellowship’ is a competitive award created to celebrate the research achievements of Dr David S Jenkinson FRS. The purpose of the Fellowship is to support early career soil scientists in furthering their academic endeavours. The award is for up to £5,000 per applicant.
In normal circumstances, the award provides support for international research visits from the UK to a collaborating organisation. However, given the current travel restrictions, the Society invites candidates to propose innovative ways of collaborating with another research organisation to pursue an area of soil science that reflects David Jenkinson’s diverse interests. The Fellowship could involve travel within or outside the UK or could be carried out from the candidate’s own institution. The topic of soil science that can be supported is unrestricted although it is expected that the topics would address some aspects of soil organic matter, nutrient dynamics, global change or soil ecology as areas of particular interest to David.
The David S Jenkinson Fellowship Guidance states that “There will be one Fellowship awarded per calendar year”. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the BSSS Grants & Awards Committee propose to offer two awards in 2021 and is inviting applications with immediate effect.
The award is offered to early career postdoctoral scientists within the first five years post-PhD award. The Society recognises that this group of scientists has few opportunities to apply for grants and is a group that David very much enjoyed mentoring and encouraging.
There are no restrictions on the type of soil science research activities that the scientist can carry out under this award; e.g. this can be for laboratory or field work or for scientific consultation and development of research ideas. The primary requirement is that the applicant must be able to demonstrate that the research collaboration will further their career in soil science.
