5th December is world soils day!
To mark this, the BSSS will be going to schools across the country to plant a tree and to highlight soil science.
Can you please email me the name and address of a school in your county that would be a contender for this activity in the north of England. Deadline for passing this to BSSS HQ is 17 Oct, so not long!
I will also need help with this, so lots of volunteers welcome!
Lancaster University will lead on training scientists of the future who will improve our understanding of soils, which are key to tackling many of today’s global challenges, including food, water and energy security.
The 2015 Early Career researchers’ (ECR) conference will be held at the University of York on the 7th and 8th of April.
Running since 1986, this conference brings together vibrant PhD students in the area of soil science.
An important aim of the ECR conference is to provide a platform for early career researchers to present their work and network with their peers and colleagues. This conference is, therefore, an excellent opportunity for students to showcase, discuss and disseminate their work in a formal setting.

Hello all! It is great pleasure to announce that Kirsty Ross, a PhD student at Lancaster University has offered to be the NSN Student Representative. Kirsty offered her help at the BSSS AGM and will be a valued member of the regional group.
Kirsty, pictured centre collecting her 1st prize for her poster at the AGM (nice one Kirsty!) is studying phosphorous transfer from soil to water.
The Council meeting went well today. Key thing for NSN is to have meetings and field day activities. This not only gets people together, but also brings some funds into the charity. If you have any thoughts on a meeting then do please let me know at NSN@soils.org.uk
Early Careers Conference - York, April 2015
This is a great opportunity for PhD and post-docs to co-organise and attend this fully funded conference. Please let your students in your departments know about this event. More details will follow.
Here is the first group post for NSN on the new-look BSSS website.
This is our space to share news, discuss soil matters in the North and keep communications going.
To kick off, here is a photo of myself with Anthony Hough at the Myerscough College graduation ceremony in June. Anthony won the BSSS Soil Science award for his MSc studies in sports turf science.
Coming up is the AGM in Manchester, 3-4 Sep. I look forward to seeing many of you there.
